Ashiya Onsen
Ashiya Onsen
Recently remodeled and looking great. Ultra modern yet somewhat municipal and all-in-all very "Ashiya." This is a city run hot spring. Built to serve the locals after the Great Hanshin Earthquake while the water system was being repaired. I originally went here when the original prefab building housed the baths. Since then they reopened in a more permanent building on the same site. There's a hot spring here that fills the two very well designed tubs. Also there's a filling station to take the spring water home for use in your own bath and a free foot bath outside.
Since this is publicly owned by the city of Ashiya, residents get a discount. Those living outside of Ashiya have to pay the full price. Like Tokiwa-Yu in Kobe, this is a living reminder of the Great Hanshin Earthquake and worth checking out for that reason alone.
