Miyajima Onsen
Miyajima Onsen
A little gem of a sento that doesn't show up on Google Map searches (edit: it does now). I actually stumbled into this one by mistake after discovering the sento listed on Google Maps no longer existed. I had no information about this sento and I was ready for it to be a bomb, but instead it was fantastic. There is a free second floor sauna. Yea it's a bit worn out, but the piped in music was nice and the air was piping hot. Downstairs there is a great selection of different baths including a small yet very refreshing outdoor bath. The man working the bandai was very pleasant also.
Review Update February 2020: This was only my second visit to Miyajima and I recall the first one fondly. This visit reconfirmed that memory. I really enjoy this sento and think it is an ideal representation of this size of sento that is somewhere between the small and medium sized sento. It has a full array of baths from electric, to cold water, to a hot sauna and outdoor bath and it is all nicely fit into a very small space. The quiet and dark upstairs cold bath was calming. The outdoor bath, while lacking an unobstructed view of the sky, has a simple, calming elegance to it. There is even a waterfall bath outside in a small enclosed space that becomes a single person steambath once the strong blast of hot water shoots from the roof.
The owner here was very kind and talkative. He was quite happy to have a gaijin ofuro maniac like me visit his bathhouse. It is the interactions like this that make this hobby refreshing not only physically but also mentally.
Yes Miyajima has some broken tiles here and there, but it is clean and very welcoming. Heiwa Onsen is nearby with natural hot spring baths and a much larger outdoor area, Miyajima, however, has a simple elegance that makes it just as good in my mind making it a sento that I feel is definitely worth checking out.
