Shioiri Onsen
Shioiri Onsen
Shiori Onsen is part of a rural community center with a farmers market, restaurant and bath. The design is very modern for the area with the baths built into the side of a small valley. The indoor and outdoor baths look across the valley at the mountain on the other side and the road in the bottom. The spring water here is effective but that is all I remember. (I'm writing this review 3 years after going.) In the small rotenburo another bather told me the water was brought in by truck from two wells. One for the rotenburo and one for the indoor bath. Each bath had a unique feel and that was enjoyable. The picture I got of the onsen information sign said there were two springs used in the baths here, but on the website now only one spring is listed and called a hitou (秘湯 / secret bath). I guess they don't want to publicize that the water is trucked in. The spring is listed as a cold water spring also so the water is definitely heated and recycled. That said, I would like to go back to Shiori if the chance arises. The landscape was really beautiful and I enjoy the baths. Also, in the JA shop they had a bag of dried garlic and goya chips that was awesome. They swap the men's and women's baths on the first Wednesday of the month.
