Ikkyu Kyoto Honkan
For a place that costs this much you would expect more, but sadly it was not worth the trip or the cost. If at all possible, try to use a discount coupon for this supersento like the one from Asoview that I used. The furnishings here are top notch as are the buildings and gardens that surround them. Walking up the stone pathway through the gardens to the entrance does set the scene and fill you with a great sense of anticipation. The baths are well designed with some lovely use of concrete in the tubs adding an austere sense to them. However, if you strip away the setting and gardens there is not much meat in the sandwich. The bath selection is what should be expected in any supersento but there are a few oddities if you just peak around the corners. Like the depressing, almost warehouse feeling cold-water bath and the odd corner of the main outdoor bath where it seemed like the architect just ran out of ideas or the developer’s money. The water quality here is fine but nothing particularity amazing. Sadly, yet understandably, the outdoor baths are all over chlorinated. This facility is located well up in the hills where the bugs reign above humans and enjoy the spring water just as much as we do. On the day of my trip, I was surprised to see a rather large centipede with its red and orange legs skittering across the concrete pathway between the baths. To sum it up, this is a fine supersento with beautiful gardens and a decent spring but remember that you are paying for the frame and not the picture. Worth at least one visit.
