Shirataki Onsen
Shirataki Onsen
Amazing sento. You think you have seen it all but then you find another amazing one. Sadly this one is more worse for wear than most sento, so it might be better for a veteran bather than a first timer. There is a bit more green stuff and chipped tiles than I can assume a casual bather might want to put up with. That disclaimer aside, I absolutely loved this one. The channel of water filling the baths was just amazing. Then there is the way the steam sauna on the second floor is heated by jets of scalding hot water shooting on a plane of class looking out over the main bath. It's hard to explain, you will have to see it in person. Seriously, this was one of the most unique bath layouts I have ever seen. Beyond that, the floral tiles at the bathing faucets and drainage gutters were quite beautiful. There was also Mondrian-esque stained glass here and there to enjoy. Speaking to the baths, they were hotter than typical but that may have been my body condition. The jet baths have showers that can "massage" your shoulders and are controllable by a knob. I have seen these before but usable ones are quite rare. Sadly, there is not much pressure and I don't think they have much of an effect. The second floor steam sauna is top notch. They have opened the safety door that used to separate the hot jets of water from the room. I can only assume that the water temperature has fallen with age and use so keeping the door open is the only way to keep the sauna at a decent temperature. I sat on the bench closest to the open window and some of the hot water splashed on me. While I would not advise putting your hand into that stream, the splatter was not too hot in the 45~50°C range I guess. The accompanying cold water bath was in the perfect complementary temperature range and amply chlorinated to make anyone feel safe getting in. Lastly there were three quirky things in the changing room to see. 1) The extremely old looking water cooler which I happily used to fill my bottle. 2) The Rococo busty girl mounted on the wall. That was surprising to see. She's got some boobs to be proud of. (Do the girl's side of sento have the same things?) 3) Lastly and the best, the toilet door was a full length body mirror and the signage was といれっと in hiragana! Hahah. Like I said above, this sento is in need of repairs but the design is so unique that I do recommend it for sento fans. So the Asahi ward website, Osaka bathhouse assoication website and Google all have different hours and days off for this place and I did not get a photo of a sign so the holiday and hour data might be different.
