Shiki Matsuri

Shiki Matsuri

Update Jan 2021: Big changes here which brought some good and some bad. All the baths that the original review was written about are no longer in use. The day use (and I assume overnight guests) now use baths on the ground floor you enter the building on. A new lobby with vending machines, tables and beanbags is available. This section along with the rest of the experience seems like a newly built business hotel trying to be fashionable and hip. Once into the changing rooms you will be amazed by just how HUGE the space is here. Same with the baths. The bath to floor ratio here sucks. There are only two baths here an indoor one with trucked in water from Taki no Yu in neighboring Kaizuka city and outdoors is the local spring in an l-shaped tub. Both baths are shallow and there are no jets or bubbles or anything. It was hard to judge the view as we went after the sun went down but I did not seem like you could see the river like the old outdoor bath. There is also an upstairs area which is just an open balcony to stand around naked in. Bathing in the forest air, I guess? Would be good if it was a summer afternoon, but this was a rainy winter night. My guess is that they had more plans for this place but COVID-19 killed the budget. Maybe they will add more on in a few years after the tourist market returns. Both springs are nice with the local one being more noticeable. This offers a good chance to compare two springs which have different compositions but there is not much else worthy of driving so far out of your way for. If you are headed up here as part of a day in the hills and taking a bath before going home or staying overnight, it would make more sense. Going out of your way only for this only would only be for fanatics like me. There is not even a cold water bath!
Hotel, outdoor resort and day use hot spring in the hills above Kishiwada city. Hiked up the adjacent valley then down this valley to get here. It's about 6 to 7 km from the top of Mt. Izumi Katsuragi. Very quiet on the Friday afternoon I visited. It looks like there has been some remodeling done recently in the baths and including the foot bath I am writing this post from. The spring is noticeable, but of average quality with a slippery feel. The baths are basic but there is a cold water so it worked for me after a 25 km hike. Accessible by a free shuttle bus and paid city bus.
